The sooner you repair a rock chip, the better your chances of saving your windshield and achieving the best possible repair result.

When a chip is repaired while it's still clean and dry, the repair can often become nearly invisible. However, if dirt, water, windshield washer fluid, or other contaminants enter the damaged area, the repair may still restore the windshield's strength but could leave a visible mark or blemish behind.

Two Simple Steps to Protect Your Windshield

1. If the Chip Is Dry, Cover It Immediately

If you notice a fresh rock chip, place a small piece of clear packaging tape over the damaged area as soon as possible.

This helps keep out:

  • Dirt and road debris

  • Rainwater

  • Windshield washer fluid

  • Other contaminants

Important: Only use clear packaging tape. Other types of tape may leave residue that can affect the quality of the repair. Also, avoid placing tape in your direct line of sight while driving.

2. If the Chip Is Already Wet, Leave It Uncovered

If moisture has already entered the chip, do not place tape over it. Covering a wet chip can trap moisture inside the break and make it more difficult to achieve the best repair results.

Instead, allow the damaged area to dry naturally and contact a professional as soon as possible.

One of the fastest ways for a small chip to turn into a large crack is exposing the windshield to rapid temperature changes.

  • Running your defroster on high heat

  • Blasting cold air conditioning onto a hot windshield
